Hauge Norwegian Church - Two Views November 2013

Hauge Two Views WEB

The Hauge Norwegian Church is one of my favorite places in the world. It is only five miles from home, so I visit it often in every season and in every type of weather. Sometimes on a bike ride I stop by just to sit and enjoy the view. During the Summer there are often bluebirds near the church and in the prairie to the south and west are meadowlarks and bobolinks. This past November I made two of my better pictures of Hauge. November is one of my favorite months to photograph with the short days, soft light and the bare trees showing their shapes. The image on the left was made just before sunrise, looking west, with the earth shadow and the first light of the day coloring the sky. The image on the right was made in the early afternoon on a rainy, blustery day. I like the simplicity of the window and clapboard siding, and what makes the image work is the clouds and view of the hills and valleys to the west. One of the reasons Norwegian immigrants chose this area to live was because the landscape reminded them of home, and this is why this image works for me.
